The epic is a poem of the form to describe things, an event and has some length.

"The Tale of Genji" has been evaluated as first class literary arts to include a 31-syllable Japanese poem.
Development from an epic to a novel is common, but when it was written by prose not verses, this becomes a novel, and prose is already seen in "Daphnis and Kuroe" in the second century, of in the West.
